Video Killed The Radio Star

Despite my best efforts to lower the tone the organisation of this ride is pretty slick.  We have team cycle jerseys and caps, crew uniforms, branding for the van and business cards with QR  codes...the whole enchilada.  We even have a film crew!

We are being shadowed by a 2 person team who will create a 45 minute TV documentary.  We don't have funding from Netflix so the crew are two students (of journalism and documentary film making) but we have seen a glimpse of their work and they know their craft!


They are a young and attractive couple...the perfect counter-balance to the support crew.


As well as the full documentary they are tasked with creating a 5 minute version to be screened at the World Parkinson's Congress in Phoenix.  The following short teaser was knocked up in their bedroom after just 2-3 days on the road so I'm really looking forward to seeing the final result.  I'm assuming (and hoping) that my scenes won't survive the edit!

I imagine that once this gets circulated it will only be a matter of time before more film work comes my way.  I'm envisioning a fly-on-the wall series on the life of a cycle tour leader.  I suppose Grumpy Old Men On Bikes wouldn't be a bad title.  Then there will be a book deal and I eventually I'll be found dead in a brothel wearing nothing but a bicycle pump.


The weather has perked up considerably today; dry from the start and now the sun has a modest hat on.  We are heading to Gold beach where we have our first rest day.  I get the sense that, for some, it can't come too soon!

    The film crew is doing a great job, the cyclists are doing a great job. Steve I don't always understand. It's those funny words I don't understand! See you in Phoenix. Have a wonderful rest day in Gold Beach and the rest is all down hill (South) to California

Real Gone Kid Having arrived a little late at the start, Nick made up for it by leaving a day early.  There was a tear in my eye as I waved him off...then I realised I could take his bedroom.  This was particularly welcome since Plum's snoring was so bad last night I ended up sleeping on the sofa. When The Going Gets Tough

We plan our trips, as far as is practical, to enjoy decent weather but this is never a given. A bit of rain is to be expected, and nothing to be afraid of, but the forecast for Lisbon was wetter than a wet thing.  Faced with the prospect of finding shelter for building our bikes then 20 miles of sub-aqua cycling to our hotel we resolved to get a taxi. Arriving into Lisbon, there was a noticeable absence of rain so figured we might as well revert to plan A and cycle.  The promised long queues for biographic data capture didn't materialise.  Those cunning Portuguese had found a way round the problem...they didn't bother trying.  As a man who has been preparing his stool sample for several days this was a bit of a disappointment. The Way We Were

Air travel is not what it is was....unless you fly from Southend. For about 50 quid we parked in the 'premium' parking which is about 50 yards from the main terminal door.  If that doesn't take your fancy the station is also 50 yards from the door.  Easyjet is the only airline operating from Southend and this morning they had a grand total of 7 flights to get away.  Check in is 50 yards beyond the door, security another 50 and the gate...you've guessed it!  I imagine this is how it was back in the glory days of post-war air travel...though the passengers were a little more orange and botoxed than the sort of passengers boarding the flying boat to Sydney back in the day.
