News Of The World
No fires last night! We went into town for dinner in a little bar on Main Street. Shelton is not a big town and it wasn't a big bar but the menu had about 20 good craft beers on it. What a change from 20 years ago when you struggled to get anything but Miller or Budweiser! Supermarkets also have a good selection of craft beers, though I sense a worrying trend towards 'silly' beers. The shelves are full of beer from companies nobody has ever heard of, in garish livery and with names like Voodoo Jazz Hands. They all now seem to pack a ridiculous punch - entry level IPA's are 7% or more and some are in the 9's. As I said...silly.
On the plus side I suspect that the buying public is shunning these little start-up breweries and they often seem to be on sale at a good discount over the big boys like Sierra Nevada and Lagunitas.
A couple from the local PD support group were keen to meet with us and we arranged a rendezvous in Montesano, about half way through our ride and an obvious lunch stop. I'll call them Betsy and Bob, mainly because that was their names, and they had reserved us a private room in a nice little diner. Betsy presented each of us with a pressed 4-leaf clover, a touching gesture which everyone appreciated. Betsy had also lined up a reporter from the local rag. A group of people living with PD cycling 2100 miles is apparently bigger news in Grays Harbour County than it was in Seattle and she actually turned up!
She reports for The Daily World, an ambitious title for a local newspaper. I didn't catch her name but I think it was Lois Lane. We gave interviews, posed for pictures, ate our lunch and got back on the road.
It is possible Betsy will find this blog via Facebook, in which case....thank you Betsy and Bob!
We are now in Westport and actually on the Pacific Coast. This is a major commercial fishing port and geared up for the needs of fishermen (and women!). You can happily get breakfast at 4:30 in the morning but don't even think about looking for dinner after 7pm.
Tomorrow is a long day but we will have the ocean as company and will actually be heading south.
