Road to Nowhere

The walled town of Evora is steeped in history and the receptionist at our hotel presented us with a little map and carefully marked the Chapel of Bones and many other must-see wonders.  We sat outside and carefully studied this over a cold beer .....then threw it away and had another one.

We had pizza for dinner which barely warrants a mention but the house wine......boy oh boy. It wasn't really a wine sort of place so we just ordered a glass of the 2 euro house red and were rewarded with two generously filled glasses.  They slipped down nicely so we ordered two more.  They had, at this point, run out of standard glasses so came back with goldfish bowls filled to a similar level.  We reckon each glass had about half a bottle in it.  How was the pizza? No idea.....can't remember!

In a couple of years you will be able to drive from Evora to Badajoz (where we now are) on the motorway that they are half-heartedly building.  Our route crossed and recrossed the construction all day.  Or rather it did until about 10 miles from the end when our road just came to an abrupt end overlooking a deep cutting where the motorway will go.   Not only did we have to backtrack several miles but we had to do it up the biggest hill of the day.  Bugger.

Frankly I don't know why they are building the motorway at all.  Yesterday we crossed one that was finished.  Not a single car in either direction.  We had just started to conclude that it couldnt have opened when a lone car trundled past.  It is a toll road and I have calculated that it should be paid for by the year 2157.

Despite the extra miles, the generally lumpy terrain and a 1 hour time jump we were in our hotel by 3:30.  We have hidden some beers under the frozen peas at the nearby Intermarche and will go and buy them once we have had a shower.  That should just leave us another 7 or 8 hours to fill until the restaurants open.  Bloody Spain!!!
