On the Border
Time has passed since my last report and we are now just acrosss the border into the Czech Republic and in Plzen (Pilsen). We are staying in the shadow of a sodding great brewery and I now discover that Pilsen is the original home of pilsner lager. It is also the home of Budweiser......from the days when it was a proper beer and not American horse piss.
It is easy to tell when you reach the Czech Republic because of so the hoardings advertising massage parlours, 'nightclubs' and casinos. It seems that such things are not permitted in the mighty Federal Rebublic but freely available a few yards across the border.
The Bed's Too Big Without You
Last night we stayed in Weiden - a large but fairly crappy town. Our hotel room (we have more or less given up on camping) was booked as a 'double' room with TWO large beds. When we arrived we found our room had one bed.
We requested a room change but were told the mistake was ours and it would cost another ten quid to 'upgrade' to a 2-bedded room. I was a bit cross. The room was booked through booking.com, through whom I book many hundreds of bed nights each year, so I called them and shouted. They called the hotel and shouted. The hotel manager called me and sulked.....but gave us another room for free. I think Neil was appalled at my tantrum but sometimes you have to make a stand.
The Wheels on The Bus
The simple rule in pizza restaurants is that the pizza should exceed the size of a bus steering wheel. After my battle with the German hotel industry we went in search of a recommended pizza restaurant. It was small and busy (a good sign) and we only just managed to get a table. As we perused the menu our eyes were drawn to the Volcano which was described as being 'Doppeldecker'. Not only could you drive a very large bus with the Volcano it WAS a double decker.....like a Calzone but with pizza bases top and bottom rather than one folded in half. I couldn't eat it all!!!!!!
Howard Bound
Well, not really but we are more than half way so we are sort of heading home now. Tomorrow Prague.
